Estadista indio y uno de los fundadores de la India moderna. En su juventud intentó de manera infructuosa ingresar a la administración pública del país, en una época en que estaba virtualmente vedado a los indios étnicos. Se convirtió luego en profesor y fundó un colegio en Calcuta (actual Kolkata), que más tarde recibió su nombre. Intentó atraer a hindúes y musulmanes a una acción política conjunta y durante 40 años promovió un punto de vista nacionalista a través de su periódico,
The Bengalee. Elegido en dos ocasiones presidente del Congreso Nacional Indio, abogó por una constitución india según el modelo canadiense. Fue elegido en 1913 a participar en dos consejos legislativos y posteriormente se le concedió el título de sir (
caballero) (1921). En 1924 fue derrotado por un candidato independentista, tras lo cual se retiró a escribir su autobiografía,
